German Centre for Endosonography
In December 2008, the Medical Clinic C was declared a "Reference Centre for Endosonography" by Hitachi Medical Systems GmbH. Based in Mainz, the company is one of the world-leaders in medical devices in the field of diagnostic imaging.
Endosonography uses high resolution ultrasound and endoscopy in combination to assess the surface of the mucous membranes and walls of a specific section of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as the surrounding organs such as the pancreas and biliary tract. In recent years, this technology has taken a central role in the diagnosis of cancers of the upper gastrointestinal tract. Since its beginnings as purely an imaging tool, this technology has undergone significant development and, today, can be used to perform biopsies of surrounding tissues (e.g. lymph nodes, tumours) or perform therapeutic procedures (e.g. drainage of abscesses and cysts) through the walls of the gastrointestinal tract.
Recognition as a Reference Centre ensures that the Medical Clinic C will continue to have access to the latest developments in the field of endosonography as well as being able to collaborate with international research groups on questions relating to the technology's clinical applications. The Centre is also collaborating on developing training modules for external users from German hospitals and private practices. These will be offered as training courses and seminars.
