Multiple Sclerosis Outpatient Services
Our Multiple Sclerosis Outpatient Services offer advice to patients with multiple sclerosis or suspected multiple sclerosis. A particular focus of our services it the scrutiny of potentially misleading differential diagnoses that may appear to be indicative of multiple sclerosis.
Apart from asking us to assess differential diagnoses, our outpatients often request our advice as to whether immunomodulatory therapy or the escalation of an existing immunomodulatory regime might be necessary. In addition to treating patients with interferons, glatiramer acetate, mitoxantrone and other immunosuppressants we are also committed to detecting, and treating, concomitant symptoms, particularly chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, and memory disturbance, disturbances of bladder and bowel function as well as sexual function, pain and spasticity.
Our internal quality control measures include a database to record standardised data on disease progression and therapy. Naturally, this is only done with the patient's permission. Standardised records minimise any subjective influence of individual examining doctors on data recorded and enable us to monitor disease progression in as independent and objective a manner as possible.
Our consultations are run in close collaboration with specialists from the Neurology Clinic, which is a "recognised MS Centre", certified by the German Multiple Sclerosis Society (Deutsche Multiple Sklerose Gesellschaft, DMSG) as meeting the requirement of providing high quality treatment based on recognised guidelines. In collaboration with the DMSG our outpatient services also offer monthly specialist consultations on illness-related workplace and family problems.
Our outpatient services are located on Floor 5 of Building B. Please make an appointment by contacting the EEG (Electroencephalography) office.
When attending your appointment, please bring a referral letter from your neurologist, as well as any relevant illness-related records (e.g. medical reports, MRI scans) with you.
Our outpatient consultations are available to all patients with confirmed or suspected MS, via referral from a specialist practitioner. As a result, you will need to bring a referral letter from your neurologist, as well as any relevant illness-related records (e.g. medical reports, MRI scans) with you.
Patients who use our outpatients services are sometimes asked whether the might be interested in taking part in clinical studies. We are currently involved in studies on MS and osteoporosis, MS and depression, the effect of physical exercise on fatigue in MS, and one study which assesses the effectiveness of an oral medicine (teriflunomide) in patients with a first clinical episode consistent with MS.

Botulinum Toxin Outpatient Services
Our outpatient service offers patients treatment with botulinum toxin type A or B for the management of dystonias, facial spasms, upper and lower limb spasticity and excessive sweating.
When injected into the affected muscle or under the skin, botulinum toxin, a neurotoxin produced by bacteria, leads to paralysis of tensed or overactive muscles. In certain cases injection of the toxin is done under electromyographic guidance.
The effect of the toxin is time limited and treatment needs to be repeated at regular intervals.
Prior to treatment with botulinum toxin, the effect of the toxin and any possible side effects are discussed in detail.
Conditions that may benefit from treatment include:
- Blepharospasm and Meige Syndrome
- Cervical Dystonia
- Other types of focal dystonia (e.g. writer's cramp)
- Dystonic head tremor
- Hemifacial spasm
- Increased muscle spasticity (e.g. following stroke, Multiple Sclerosis)
- Focal hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
This is an appointment only service. Appointments must be arranged by telephone in advance and are via referral only by a specialist practitioner or neurologist. Please remember to bring any X-ray images and medical reports with you.

Neurosonology Outpatient Services
Neurosonology Outpatient Services offers diagnostic testing and advice on diagnostic and therapeutic options for patients with disorders affecting the blood vessels of the brain and cerebral circulation.
Our services focuson a preventative treatment approach using platelet aggregation inhibitors and, where applicable, oral anticoagulants as well as recognising the importance of optimising the management of cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, increased cholesterol levels and diabetes mellitus. Where narrowing of the carotid artery (carotid stenosis) has occurred, an exact assessment of the degree of narrowing can inform decisions as to whether surgical intervention (carotid endarterectomy) is required, or alternatively, a widening of the artery using a stent (Percutaneous Transluminal Angioplasty with Stenting, PTA). Decisions about the most appropriate treatment options are made in consultation with referring doctors. In addition, our services include treatments for non-atherosclerotic vascular disease, including arterial dissection and vasculitis.
Technologies used include the whole range of ultrasonography techniques, including extracranial and transcranial doppler sonography and colour-coded duplex sonography, which are offered echocontrast-enhanced where necessary, and allow difficult diagnoses to be made, including cases of paradoxical embolism.
Every year our ultrasonography laboratory performs approximately 5000 doppler and duplex sonography scans for our inpatients and outpatients. The laboratory is a training centre accredited by the German Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ultraschall in der Medizin, DEGUM) and the German Society for Clinical Neurophysiology (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Klinische Neurophysiologie, DGKN).
To make an appointment please contact the EEG office on 0621 503 4207.
Our Outpatient Services are located in Ludwigshafen Hospital, on Floor 5 of Building B Upon arrival, please report to the EEG office.
Please bring your current referral letter from your specialist/neurologist, your insurance card and any relevant medical documentation (e.g. medical reports, CT and MRI scans) as well as a list of any current medications.
